As Within, So Without

We Create Our Reality

Once upon a time, I was a basket case. Once upon a time, I was so miserable that I just didn’t want to deal with myself anymore. I personally, had to become completely and utterly done with life before the realization came that I create my reality. I do realize that some people see this as a controversial idea. I definitely didn’t like it at first. Like, hello!! If this was up to me, surely, this is not what I would choose. I would not choose to be crazy, depressed, addicted, and downright miserable. I would not choose to feel utterly alone and worthless. I would not choose anxiety and crippling depression. I would not choose uncontrollable bouts of rage. I would not choose poverty for me and my children. Are you crazy?!?!? I would not choose any of this. But the truth is, we do. We may do it on auto-pilot and therefore feel as if it is some force or circumstance outside of ourselves that makes us miserable, but ultimately, the choice to be miserable or happy rests within ourselves.

Our life on the outside, also called our manifestations, come from within. Everything that is alive grows from the inside out. Much like a tree. All that we see is the part that has grown up and out of the soil. But the life of the tree is beneath. You can chop a branch off a tree and it will still live. But kill the roots and the entire thing will wither and die. The vitality of the entire tree is dependent on the roots…the part we cannot see. We are much the same. All that we see, and often the only thing we pay attention to is our circumstances. Very often, we do not explore what’s in the roots. We do not consider that our circumstances may have something to do with what is inside ourselves. One of my favorite poets, Rumi, said:

“Maybe you are searching among the branches, for what only appears in the roots."

With all of that being said, it is important to note that if you do find yourself in an undesirable place in life the worst thing that you can do is take these words and beat yourself over the head with them. It is not uncommon at all to live on auto-pilot. I would venture to say that is how the majority of people live. Most of us have been conditioned to believe so many things that are complete and utter nonsense. Many of us are raised to believe that we must conform and that the definition of success is the good ole’ white picket fence blah, blah, blah. And if we don’t achieve some cookie-cutter life then we must have gone terribly wrong and there must be something wrong with you! Many are raised to believe that you must fight for your life and that we are supposed to be miserable and overcome. As if some eye in the sky is going to give us a merit badge dependent on how much we suffer. But the badge is useless anyway since we don’t get it until we’re dead. So what’s the point? Many are raised to believe that we are not really worth much, that we don’t deserve everything that we want. The world doesn’t revolve around you, ya selfish jerk! I for one, think that this is a crazy way to live. These ideas are where I started questioning what life is really about. Is life just a suffer/reward exchange, an accumulation of material objects and then death? Really?

Although there is something to be said for overcoming adversity, it is not necessary to suffer in life in order to be rewarded. Yes, overcoming adversity does give us character and perspective which would often be difficult to gain otherwise. We do learn some invaluable life lessons through adversity, but it is not necessary to become miserable to find happiness. It’s just that many of us begin our journey of becoming happy and joyful through a desperate need for relief from our misery. Either way, life is supposed to feel good. We are meant to be happy. We are meant to have a sense of purpose. We are meant to do great things with the time we have here.

If you are happy with where you are in life, well, you probably stopped reading this somewhere in the first paragraph. But, if you are feeling like maybe there is something more to life, that maybe a change would suit you well then I just want you to know that it is possible. It is possible to live a happy life. It’s not just possible, it is the way life is supposed to be. It is possible to manifest your heart’s desire. It’s not just possible, it is the way life is supposed to be. The first step is to at least consider, without judgment, that you are a powerful creator and whether you choose to create on auto-pilot or intentionally is completely up to you. If you can consider that, and ponder it until you can accept it (at least sort of) then the world can become your playground rather than your prison. You just need to tend to your roots. Work from the inside and watch the outside change accordingly.
