A True Story

Depression has a wide range of causes and potential treatments.

She was very young when he came into their lives, probably around four or five at the time. Still in that young trusting age, oh, what a shock this turned out to be.

At first everything was great, he gave them love and attention, but as the days, weeks, and months went by, he slowly got angrier and angrier. He would yell, he would scream, he would hit with anything he could get his hands on. At only five years old she was hit with a stick, a thick, long stick for the very first time, and it wouldn’t be the last. At six, the man had completely given up on being a father figure towards the two younger siblings, the girl and boy. The eldest girl was the princess of the house; she got away with everything. She didn't want to do her chores. It was alright, the younger two would do them. Didn't want to take care of her animals, the younger two would feed and water them each and every day along with theirs. She broke something, the two youngest would have to decide who took the blame for it. It was always the middle child, the young girl. She had grown very protective of her younger brother.

Skip ahead to eight years old, the youngest became the mother's favorite, and the middle child was all alone. The young girl did all her chores, no questions asked. She fed and watered the cats, dogs, and rabbits because if she didn't, no one else would. It was up to her to clean the whole house; her mom was always working, the man was working, and her brother and sister didn't want to clean at all. No matter how clean the house was, she still got yelled at for the little things that she didn't do or the things that her sister and brother messed up during the day. She would come home from school. Do her homework, clean house, and help her mother cook for the rest of the evening. This was her life every single day. If something wasn't right, she would be punished.

At ten years old, things took a turn for the worse. Her body started to fill out her clothes, and she would catch him watching her more than usual. It was awkward. She didn't know what he was doing. She was so innocent to these types of things. One day he asked if she wanted to see a movie. She should have known something was up. She said yes and went to his room. His room was the only room with a TV in it. Halfway through the movie, he started to tickle her. She thought he was finally coming around to being a real father figure to her, so she played along. Then her touched her. She stopped and held her breath. What was he doing, she thought. She quickly slapped his hands away and scrambled for the door. He pulled her back and shook his head. She hit him again and got away. She ran into the kitchen where her mother and sister were playing a board game. She told her mother that he was touching her. He came up behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders and said they were tickling each other. Her mom believed him over her and told her to go play with him. She didn't want to, but had no choice but to go back to his room. She huddled herself into a corner and glared at him every time he came close. Finally, the movie was over and she ran for the door. He grabbed her hand and said she could come back when everyone was asleep. The girl said no and to let her go before she screams. He let go and watched her leave. From that day forward, things only got worse and worse. Every other night, he would come into her room at two in the morning to touch her. She was too scared to do anything. She knew he could overpower her at any time if he truly wanted to. It was only touching, thank god. She prayed and prayed to god for him to answer her prayers to get him out of her life, but not once did he answer them. It stayed that way for five years. When she was 15, he finally stopped, and it was like he had forgotten the whole thing, but she didn't. She had changed, she had anger. She was mad, angry, felt betrayed. She wanted nothing more than to end it all. At the age of 18, her mom got a divorce from the man. No, it wasn't because she found out what he had done, she just didn't love him anymore. Her mother and the girl moved to another town while the older sister and younger brother stayed in the hometown together. There she had her first suicidal attempt, overdosing on pills. She was sent to the hospital where they watched over her for a few hours. The pills did nothing so they sent her home. She felt ashamed. She saw her mother’s disappointed face. She was later sent to a mental health center who had decided to send her to a hospital to watch over her for a week and put her on pills. The pills had been working but they slowly stopped. She had a relapse and was sent to another hospital at the age of 19. There, they put her on three different types of pills for different reasons.

Bipolar Disorder

Multiple Personality Disorder

PTSD

The pills also helped with the nightmares and flashbacks she got from time to time. She has started to do better than she had been, but not as much as she would like. She has severe anxiety. She can't leave the house to go to work, so she has no job. If she leaves the house, she has this fear that she will see him everywhere she goes.

Till this day she is still 19, and she is still afraid each and every day. Her mother finally knows what made her try to kill herself and apologises for it each and every day. This story is true and is still continuing on. I know this because this story is mine. It's my life, I have lived it, and I am getting better.
