If you are reading this you either have anxiety or genuinely want to know what NOT to say to someone with anxiety. If you have anxiety... Don't worry, you are not alone. If you are here because you are want to know what not to say, then welcome! I am very glad you decided to give this a read. I am hoping that you help see things from the view of someone with an anxiety disorder simply just from reading this article.

Also, dear genuine person... Please take what you read here with a grain of salt. It gets sassy. Please don't take it personally.

Anxiety disorders are common, but they can also range in severity by a very dramatic amount. So let's not assume all people with anxiety are the same. Please.

1. "Other people have it worse than you."

Well... yes. However, that doesn't make one person's pain non-existent. All this is doing is being dismissive of the person's pain.

2. "I don't understand why you care so much about it."

I'm going to really honest... I don't always understand either why... but that's a really unsupportive comment.

3. "Just get over it."

I've heard this one so many times. I did eventually get over some of the things they were talking about... but it took time. A lot of time.

Also, why don't they get over their lack of patience!! PFFFT! Rude people telling me to just get over it!

4. "It's all in your head."

Technically yes, it is all in my head. However, that is not what they mean. They are saying this comment to be dismissive and that's not okay!

5. "Relax, okay?"

No, YOU RELAX!!! That's actually what I say about this.

6. "You are really overthinking this."

Well great, now I'm overthinking about overthinking... So, not helping!

7. "You don't have to worry as much as you do."

I would love to worry less, trust me. That's not how it works!

8. "OMG, not again."

I think this one is the worst. It hurts just writing it.

9. "Just have a drink, okay?"

Yeah, if I used alcohol to self-medicate myself for my anxiety I would become an alcoholic. So no!

10. "It's really not a big deal."

OMG! I'm cured! Thank you, that's all I needed.

Thank You!

Thank you for reading my article, I hope you enjoyed it. If so, please feel free to read my other articles here on Vocal. I write about both personal and political things, so whatever you are looking for, I’ve probably written about it.

About the Author

Yes, I realize I have the same name as an amateur sleuth. No, I haven’t read the books… although I have played most of the Nancy Drew games. I am simply someone who is addicted to writing. In the day I work as a photographer and waitress… but at night I write blogs for everyone to enjoy. Does that make me a superhero? Probably not … but I can dream, right?

The truth is, I have been writing my whole life and I don’t think I could ever stop. Sometimes my writing gets real and I have been told by a couple of people that I have actually helped them before. Other times I just write about the top ten of something, which can be really fun to write!

My personal interests include eating pizza, playing video games, and cuddling with my dog. I have only recently started playing FPS games, but I have a long history in PC games. When it comes to video games, I’m quite the hipster. I like popular Indie games and love video games that almost no one had ever heard of.
