'13 Reasons Why' Delayed?

Why It May Be Delayed or Canceled

Now honestly, this show was hard to watch, but I still liked it. A lot of people were saying it was drawn out or melodramatic. Well, teenagers tend to be melodramatic. TV dramas also tend to draw things out. I know some people have had problems with it. The main group was parents. The other groups were people with suicidal thoughts and those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

The show had finished filming season 2 in December 2017, and yet with the controversies, they had to delay the release of anything new. The Parent TV council wants it to be put on hold because they want the show to be safe for minors to watch it. OK, so here is my problem. A lot of the shows already out there that teens watch (with or without parents) have all sorts of stuff in it, from sex to drugs and other choices that could be harmful to them, and yet we take offense with suicide and mental health? We should always take offense to mental health and suicide, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk about it. Mental health is so important to talk about and hiding it away won't make it go away. Plus, a show can't make them think about suicide. The thought was more than likely already there.

The parents were saying that the show was so graphic, but there is no way to have a show that deals with rape and suicide not graphic. They said there was a spike of google searches for how to commit suicide. They said there was also a spike in the number suicide attempts (some successful). Why aren't these parents monitoring what the kids watch? Why aren't they blocking this show? Haven't parents heard of parental blocks? Or they can watch this series with them and have conversations with their kids about rape, bullying, mental health, and suicide. These conversations need to happen anyway, so why not now before it's too late?

OK, I get it parents, I don't know what it's like to lose a child to suicide and I don't know what it's like to worry that I may lose a kid to suicide. I also don't know what it's like to be a working parent or a parent in general, but I do have some suggestions. Talk to your kids. Have a conversation with them without the electronics. I know a novel idea!

If your kid died by suicide because of this show, from the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry. It really is hard. I think the point of the show wasn't to promote suicide, but to educate about bullying and suicide. While we are on the topic, and not to be funny, but how do you promote suicide? Don't you think that whatever they watch isn't putting the ideas in their heads, school or depression is already doing that?

I'm not saying all of this to save a show, but I'm saying it because I think some parents tend to want to blame society for what happens to their kids or teenagers, but is it really society's fault that kids are committing suicide or are depressed? Parents are giving society to much credit in how their kids turn out. Plus you shouldn't look to society to raise your kids. If you are scared of society and its influence on your kids, what does that say about your faith in how you raised them? If you raised your kids well, they should have a strong defense against society's influences. Society sucks, so stop letting them raise and influence your kid.
