Addiction is a great, compulsive, and uncontrollable interest in a thing or action, or a strong desire to have something. Other sources defined it as an enslavement to a behavior, practice, or action that creates a habit either physically or psychologically. Addiction to something makes an individual abnormally dependent on it to such an extent that he/she cannot live without it. In an attempt to shun life stressors and other daily routines through the use of drugs and other activities, one can get so addicted to them that he/she will no longer be able to lead a normal life without them. An accurate definition of addiction, however, is dependent on both, the person asking the question and common beliefs and norms. The current essay seeks to discuss the brunt of addiction to the society, explaining why the society puts up with the impact of addiction.

In order to shun life stressors and day-to-day life challenges that are hard to control, people may start using various substances such as drugs that might unconsciously cause addiction. Therefore, addiction starts as an attempt to overcome difficulty that later turns to be a habit. The term addiction as an aberrant love and fervor relationship with an object, or an experience in trying to manage something that has been uncontrollable. In a psycho-educational presentation for the addicted clients, the educator strives to make them understand what is happening in their lives and in the lives of their loved ones. The presentation emphasizes that one unconsciously gets addicted when he/she uses a substance for some reason, thus, making it a habit that he/she cannot avoid. Moreover, the addiction can be defined as the increasing desire for something with a decreasing capability to satisfy the need. The addiction becomes real after people continuously use the substances.

Addiction has various impacts that negatively affect the families of the addicted people and the larger society as well. One of these impacts is the role failure by the people, who have been addicted, when they tend to avoid their expected duties and responsibilities. This has detrimental consequences since the smooth flow of life in the society will be affected without their contributions. Additionally, the addicted people cause harm to themselves and the people around them, when they carry out various duties and activities under the influence of drugs. For example, a person who drives or operates heavy machinery under the influence of drugs often causes accidents. Substance abuse also has negative impact on the family of the victim, since the family incurs a great cost to support their relatives during rehabilitation and to pay the medical bills. Apart from that, constant substance use increases the spending of money and since the victims neglect their duties, they do not earn enough money and turn to be burdens to their families.

The society tolerates the impacts of the addiction due to a variety of reasons. The most important of them is people's love for their relatives and the hope that they will be rehabilitated. As a result, different efforts are being made to get the statistics of the substance abusers. In addition, rehabilitative measures and places have been put in place. For example, the UK Drug Policy Commission conducted a study to establish the number of people affected by drug abuse so that they can formulate ways to assist them to curb the behavior. The families of the affected people have been playing a significant role in the treatment of their relatives by paying medical bills and paying for rehabilitation services.

In conclusion, use of substances in an attempt to control and avoid day to day stressors results in addiction that becomes a real problem to the involved people and to the society. It is reinforced by the fact that some individuals do not actually know that they are addicted and that they should seek professional assistance. Addiction has various impacts on the victim, on his/her family and on the society. The society and the family of the addicted person try to help the addict to beat his addiction.
