Bat Awareness
Is it just me or have the mosquitoes gotten worse this summer than usual? There could be a reason for that, over 200 species of bats are occupying the endangered species list! Of those 200, 13 species are in North America. These include the northern long-eared myotis, little brown bat, Indiana bat, Gray bat, Florida bonneted bat, the lesser and greater long nosed-bats, New World leaf-nosed bat, big-eared bat, Townsend's big-eared bat, Virginia big-eared bat, Hawaiian hoary bat, Eastern small-footed myotis, and the cave myotis.

Fireflies
Have you looked around at night lately and noticed there doesn’t seem to be as many twinkling lights in the grasses and treelines like there used to be when we were kids? Well scientists believe this is due to the population of fireflies slowly dwindling to the point of several species potentially going extinct. In the past, we haven’t kept as good of a track on firefly populations as we do with other insects such as the bees so it’s hard to push for legislation in protection of the fireflies until we gather more concrete proof that they are dwindling in population size. To date, there are no protected firefly species and none have been listed as endangered.

Dogwood
For the month of April I decided to choose the dogwood flower in honor of the Dogwood Festival that Fayetteville, NC hosts each year and for the fact that it’s the state flower of North Carolina. North Carolina was the second state to choose the dogwood for the state flower in March of 1941; the General Assembly decided that it would be the state flower because of its “radiantly beautiful flower which grows abundantly in all parts of this state”. The first state to choose the dogwood flower was Virginia in 1918; Missouri followed suit in 1955 after North Carolina. There are 4 varieties native to North Carolina, though Cornus florida is the most commonly known as it has the white blossoms.

Planting the Ecosystem
With spring upon us, the earth is coming to life again. The air is filled with the sounds of buzzing and chirping and the wind lightly rustling through the trees. The land is full of color and rebirth and of course our cars, houses, and everything in between is covered in pollen. As you drive down the road, you may see fields of gorgeous flowers and wonder just how did they get there? Put simply, the birds and the bees.

Winston Churchill
Winston Churchill was born in Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England on November 30th, 1874. Ninety years later Churchill died nine days after a severe stroke in his London home; he lived a life of many words in the center of WWII but was quoted as saying, “I am prepared to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.” Aside from his involvement in WWII, he had a loving wife, Clementine Ogilvy Hozier (married in 1908), and has quoted, “My most brilliant achievement was my ability to be able to persuade my wife to marry me.” Together they had five children: Diana, Randolph, Sarah, Marigold (who died as a toddler from tonsillitis), and Mary. Amongst his many achievements in life, he served as Prime Minister two separate terms from 1940-1945 & 1951-1955 and was even knighted in 1953 by Queen Elizabeth II. During his life he wrote and orated many speeches, some of which we will look at in this article; a true inspiration to the world and a man of many words, he remained humble, admitting, “In the course of my life, I have often had to eat my words, and I must confess that I have always found it a wholesome diet.”

Psychosexual Stages and Their Fixations
Before I begin, I’d like to make a disclaimer for the LGBTQ community. Although, Freud did mention in his famous letter from 1935 “…It cannot be classified as an illness; we consider it to be a variation of sexual function, produced by a certain arrest of sexual development,” referring to homosexuality. Freud’s psychosexual stages assume that each individual will take on their biological gender and participate in heterosexual relationships.

Introducing Andrew Yang
America’s third president, Thomas Jefferson, once said, “An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy,” and in light of that, it’s time to become informed about 2020 presidential candidate, Andrew Yang, as well as some of the policies he stands for.
