Modern Romance
Before the emergence of the internet, society was vastly different from the society we live in today. Without certain technologies, everyday tasks took time and energy. The goal and purpose of most technologies we have today is to make our lives easier. However, in making life easier, we have altered our society in ways that most people do not notice or think about. Although the idea itself is conclusive and obvious, technology’s effect on modern society is an idea that is argued about and debated often. Young people around the world have a deep love and interest in technology, while many scholars believe that technology can be detrimental to one’s health. One specific aspect of technology that is highly discussed is online dating. Following the invention of Match.com and eHarmony, a new platform called Tinder has arisen. Tinder works by scrolling through option after option by swiping right or left. By swiping left on a person, you discard their profile, rejecting a possibility of getting a match. Swiping right means that you are interested in that person and there is a possibility of matching with that person. A match happens when both users swipe right on each others’ profiles. Tinder is extremely controversial itself. Some feel it is superficial, while some feel Tinder is a fast, easy way to meet new people. Online dating, however used by millions of people around the world at varying ages, is debated by many.

Walking Into a Room
As the knob twists and the door whips open, the music fills my ears and the steady drumming of my heart quickens. My lungs draw in the warm air that flows around me. It smells of the heavy perfumes of girls seeking attention. One foot in the room and the stares that I felt could have bore a hole through even the thickest winter jacket. Why is everyone looking at me? As I take a second step, the blood rushes to my cheeks and I know my face is flushed. Holding back the urge to leave, I search the room for a friendly face, with little success. Why did I come here?

Tiger Mother
Every type of society has its own unique parenting norms, its own set of rules regarding what is and what is not an appropriate way of parenting. One of the more prominent parenting styles is traditional Chinese, or as some call it, “tiger mom.” This type of parenting involves strict rules and extremely high expectations. Recently, stories of this Chinese style parenting have emerged thanks to a memoir written by Amy Chua. In her memoir, Chua describes her experience as a parent and her views on being a tiger mother. But those views were questioned by many claiming that being so harsh would have harmful effects on children. Although Chua makes a strong argument for Chinese-style parenting, the style can diminish a child’s physical and mental wellbeing. Amy Chua’s parenting style hinders childrens’ exploration of interests, confidence and charm, ability to perform in a social setting, and sense of individuality.
