Borderline Personality Disorder

My Own Knowledge

People with borderline often have mood swings, and as such, they can also be bipolar. I tend to dump people who are unstable. Borderlines also project a lot making you the one at fault, when in fact, you aren’t. Borderlines get angry or depressed, in such a state that lasts only a few hours to a few days. Borderlines have difficulty with interpersonal relationships. They also self-injure through drinking or cutting, or are outright suicidal from their deep depressions. Now in my untreated family, nobody admits their depression even if they have it. Borderlines are all about black and white thinking. Look out for landing on their black. Princess Diana was a borderline, but her kids do not have it.

Therapy for a year doesn’t constitute looking deeply at one’s feelings, and analyzing why they are borderline, or why they have the personality disorder they do have. A borderline switches from love to hate very quickly, i.e. black and white. They also stay stuck in their emotive state whether good or bad. When in a bad state, they cannot see any good. People who are borderline have fears of abandonment and they do everything they can to avoid being alone, often to the point of not leaving relationships that do not work for them. Borderlines feel lost when a person they know is gone for awhile.

People with borderline are terrified of rejection and yet that is often the reaction they get. You do not want to be around a disappointed borderline. This illness runs in my family, and I know how some people get when they are disappointed. Nothing is right for them. Borderlines not on meds are chronically unstable. Recovering from borderline takes a lot of persistence some people just don’t have. A person with borderline has trouble with mood swings.

This is why some people with borderline get mistaken for having bipolar although having both is a common diagnosis. People with borderline have trouble being alone as well and go to extreme measures to not be abandoned. They also have unstable relationships where they go from one mood extreme to the other. As a child, this confused me when unnamed family members had this problem. Some people with borderline resort to outright cruelty when they have a mood swing, going back to the black of the black and white end of how they stand.

People with borderline change identity very quickly as well. Their goals and values can change over night. This is confusing to the non-borderline who has a steady personality. People with borderline often get paranoid when something weird happens to them. They also take risky behaviors and up the ante when engaging in risk-laced sexual encounters, for example. They gamble, they drive recklessly, and they spend money too much, which is also a common bipolar symptom. Spending too much money is something manic people do. People with mania and bipolar 1 disorder sometimes have wanton spending habits that would drive any normal person nuts. Like bipolar people, borderlines make suicide threats when they feel very bad.

They have to feel very bad to do something like that though, in response to fears of separating from somebody or outright rejection. Their mood swings can include shame and then happiness, two different emotional extremes. A person with borderline feels empty inside as well as having unstable mood swings. People with BPD have intense anger problems because they frequently lose their temper, get sarcastic, or bitter, and wind up getting into outright physical fights. I dump people with borderline/bipolar who are unstable since they are always projecting onto you like their wrong-doing is your fault. BPD can arise from a childhood filled with abuse and neglect.

The main cause is extreme trauma. BPD may be a result of genetics or brain problems just like bipolar 1 is a result of the structure of the brain, but even more so schizophrenia features prominent brain abnormalities. With borderline, there are problems of the brain involved in emotion regulation, impulsivity, and aggression, which is why people with borderline get aggressive at the drop of a hat. Some brain chemicals that do not function properly are supposed to help modulate emotion but they do not work well, causing low levels of serotonin and other brain chemicals. This is why people with BPD have mood swings. They require medication to correct these problems, and more of their problems such as not respecting boundaries. I have to dump unstable people for my mental health. With the talents I have, I can’t be around unstable anything. I pick up on their symptoms and get paranoid, delusional, or depressed or whatever it is they are feeling. I have to disengage from borderlines for my own good.
