Understanding the link between covert behavior and mental health can be crucial in identifying and addressing underlying issues.
Mental Health BlogsPublished about a year ago in PsycheNavigating Sadness and Depression: Coping Strategies That Work
Sadness and depression are often used interchangeably, but they are actually two distinct emotional experiences. Sadness is a natural human emotion that arises in response to a specific event or situation, such as the loss of a loved one, a break-up, or a disappointment. It is usually temporary and tends to lift as we process our feelings and adjust to our circumstances. Depression, on the other hand, is a clinical condition that affects mood, energy, and behavior, and persists for weeks, months, or even years. It can interfere with daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Social anxiety and substance abuse are two separate conditions that often occur together. Social anxiety is an extremely intense or nervous feeling in social situations, while substance abuse is the compulsive use of drugs or alcohol despite negative consequences. When these two conditions co-occur, it can be a vicious cycle, where social anxiety leads to substance abuse, and substance abuse worsens social anxiety. Understanding the link between these two conditions can help people seek the right treatment and overcome their challenges.

“She died. She killed herself.” My parents said this while holding her obituary. I barely acknowledged the statement before walking to my room and closing the door.
Alex CaseyPublished about a year ago in PsycheWorking With Children In Therapy
Why have I worked so little time with children in my work as a counselor/therapist. So little time on purpose. I worked as a family therapist for just one and one half years. As a family counselor I worked with children for many more years.
Denise E LindquistPublished about a year ago in PsycheSolace and Dread At The Taco Bell
Four days prior to my 27th birthday, I ate Taco Bell for the first time in my life. When asked why I would put my ass through that (which, it wasn’t even bad or anything, I’ve definitely incurred worse damage from some good curry), I would chirp some inane comment akin to “just trying something new!” But I was trying for a piece of freedom. The decision to eat Taco Bell was oddly dramatic– a floundering attempt at inner reflection, and then a comeuppance with reality. A deep dive of the psyche using a tostada shell to keep the small discoveries together.

Daydreaming
The round wooden table in the middle of the kitchen sat empty every night. A green placemat was in the middle under a large white bowl that she had intended to fill with lemons. There were no lemons in the bowl and there was no family or friends to join her at the table.

The Sad Girl Saga
The Sad Girl Saga is an essay collection exploring different facets of trauma and mental illness throughout my life. I started writing personal essays on accident in my creative writing class in 2018. The first line of my very first essay Almost Girl popped into my head and then I just wrote it all in one sitting. That essay has had many evolutions from it's first form but the original version is what brought me into the world of personal essay. My creative writing class was supposed to be only fiction but at the time I didn't even really know that personal essays were a genre so I shared the essay anyway. I think a lot of my classmates assumed it was fiction. My teacher definitely did. I was published that year in Central Michigan's student magazine and I won the fiction award. Taking the cover off of a personal essay and admitting it's not fiction is a strange and vulnerable feeling. But once I wrote that first one I couldn't stop writing more of them. Please be aware that these essays contain trigger warnings for sexual assault, trauma, abuse, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and child abuse. But thank you for letting me share these pieces of my life with you!
