The Benefits of Therapeutic Interventions

When it comes to psychological problems and mental health issues, people in today's world can be very apathetic. Which is why empowering yourself with the proper information in a world where there is so much misinformation is so important

Therapy is something that can be very difficult to accept, yet be extremely helpful in living a balanced health life, when it comes to understanding of ourselves and having a strong sense of self awareness of why we do the things that we do.

Let's start with types of therapy methods.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

"A type of psychotherapy in which negative patterns of thought about the self and the world are challenged in order to alter unwanted behavior patterns.”

Although it is based on the experiences themselves, it is actually more based on how we perceive those experiences. It involves examining how we react to those experiences emotionally, psychologically, and physically and why we react as we do.

It involves examining what we can do in order to change the way we react to certain situations or triggers and putting steps in place in order to make the changes needed for us to react in a positive, healthy manner.

The doctor and the patient work together to understand the issue and how it affects the individual. through various behavioral strategies, in order to help with teaching the client new and more productive ways to cope with whatever their issue happens to be. Throughout the week when you're not in session, you get goals to achieve. As an example, your therapist may ask you to keep a journal and during your session discuss your journal and the various ups and downs you wrote about and things you can do in order to work on them. In doing so, it teaches you self-awareness regarding your issue and how to build stronger coping strategies.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used for multiple issues just to name a few:

  • Anger
  • Eating disorders
  • Sleep issues
  • Addiction
  • Mental Illness
  • PTSD
  • OCD
  • General health issues
  • ADHD

Why is this so effective for mental health?

Cognitive behavioral therapy teaches you not only how to think, but how to think in a productive way. It can be done as group sessions or individually. I think both have value because just like everything else in life, it depends on your circumstances and the individual and what works best for them (which I will go into greater detail later).

Cognitive behavioral therapy works to show you your strengths and weaknesses, and how to overcome the things in your life that are holding you back. It can allow you to see the situation from outside of your own viewpoint. It teaches you how to effectively communicate with not only your therapist, but more importantly with yourself. It helps you build a better understanding of you, essentially.

Also it shows you how to recognize your own ability to enable negative behaviours within yourself and do not recognize that you're doing. Once you recognize the negative behaviors and admit that you share some responsibilities for these behaviors, then you can work on turning these behaviors into positive behaviors.

Exposure Therapy

This is another form of cognitive behavioral therapy, which involves gradually exposing you to the thing that makes you anxious. It's done in a way that is within your comfort zone so that you get used to it or become desensitized to it.

The premise of exposure therapy is to retrain the way your brain views it through “direct experience” by gradual exposure. It desensitizes the negative impact of what’s causing your issue.

As an example: Someone who has a phobia of being in the water.

Session 1. Start by getting the person comfortable with talking about water

Session 2. Figuring out where the phobia stems from.

Session 3. Watch or listen to a video having to do with water.

Session 4. Bring water in the office, using an aquarium.

Session 5. Go for a walk with the person near a water source.

Session 6. Go in the water.

In between each step, the therapist and client figure out ways to effectively move on to the next step, through various CBT exercises. The goal is to desensitization of the things which causes the negative issues and have the patient view it differently

It does this almost like cognitive behavioral therapy because it's a type of cognitive behavioral therapy. They have a lot of similarities. It gives you self-awareness of the core issue and how it affects you, and teaches you how to view it in a more productive, healthy manner

Group vs. Individual Therapy

Group Therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a group of patients meets to describe and discuss their problems together under the supervision of a therapist.

Group therapy attempts to give individuals a safe and comfortable place where they can work out problems and emotional issues.

Patients gain insight into their own thoughts and behavior, and offer suggestions and support to others.

Group Therapy focuses not only on your personal issues, but on how you interact with others. It works with patients, with interpersonal relationships can benefit from the social interactions that are a basic part of the group therapy experience.

Individual therapy focuses on the individual, and their needs. Whether it's group or client based therapy, both are useful depending on your needs. Both individual and group therapies are effective. It comes down to what is the best way of treating you, and the issue also

Talk Therapy (Client Centered Therapy)

Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is based on the core idea that talking about the things that are bothering you can help clarify them and put them in perspective. Some talk therapists follow a specific school of thought, such as cognitive theory of behaviorism.

The Importance of the Behavioral Aspects in Therapy and Our Daily Lives

The reason your behaviour is a vital part of any therapeutic treatment, is because how you act can either hinder (such as self-harm) or benefit from the therapeutic process (doing productive things that improve your life).

This is due to how you act and the things that affect you psychologically, emotionally, and physically. Depending on how you deal with them and severely they impact you are taken into consideration with the therapeutic techniques that are used

Basically therapy, regardless of the type, a treatment is used to help you recognize various things in your life, that are causing problems, and to learn productive ways to deal with them

In conclusion:], therapy can show you what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong. You can learn how to cope with issues you are having difficulty expressing. In order to find the root causes of your issues and the best way for dealing with them and the situations within your life that you find to be difficult. What is good for you isn't necessarily what's good for the person behind you in the waiting room!

What definitely isn't good for you though are the friends, family, work colleagues, etc….that tells you therapy is bad, taking medication is a weakness, and so many more things that people really have no right to say but they do anyway! Mental health treatment involves not only psychological aspects but also pharmaceutical, medical, and your own individual effort

Also remember that without the proper training and experience, going through something doesn't necessarily give you the same qualifications as a trained professional. Like I previously stated, does having your wisdom teeth out make you a dentist?

Being resilient and going through issues aren't always the same thing.
