Reasons Why Not....

A Revised Version of an Article I Wrote About the Popular Show '13 Reasons Why'

13 Reasons Why has taken over the internet. The teenage population has fallen in love with the series and the characters. They want their friends to watch it, they think it's an awareness of suicide and bullying, but honestly there are so many things wrong with this show and there are so many reasons why I won't watch it. I understand as this show takes over the internet, my opinion seems to be pretty rare and confusing to the outside world, so I'd like to give a little intel into what problems I see with this show. Granted my opinions are based on trailers and the reviews of others and I have not seen the show yet, but bare with me.

Rape is horrible. It's a crime. There's nothing good or glamorous about it. As a victim of multiple rape incidents, I find it very disturbing to watch anything on TV with rape. I couldn't watch the first episode of Bates Motel because of the rape scenes. I find it highly disturbing and morally incorrect to portray such graphic scenes with rape. Nobody needs to see that, especially victims. I understand that rape is a growing problem and that the world should know about it, but there truly is no reason to portray it so graphically.

After trying to commit suicide multiple times myself, I don't wanna watch a show where they show graphic scenes of suicide. I don't want to watch a show where it seems to come off as glamorous, because it's not. Death is not glamorous. Pain is not glamorous. It hurts and, of course, they don't wanna show you what it's really like.

The tapes Hannah had created were just another thing that angered me about this show. Beyond the grave, she was causing so much pain and suffering to her fellow students. From what I heard, all she did was point blame. Blame on why everyone else was the cause of her suicide. Blame on why everyone else was the cause of her pain. People who barely had an effect on her life, suddenly were such huge causes of her misery. That's not okay in so many ways. You can't just pass on the blame for your misery. Yes, everyone around you has an effect on your life. They have an effect on your thoughts and your decisions. But there is a point you have to stop pushing blame on other people for your pain and misery. You need to accept the fact that you have an impact on your own life as well. After trying to commit suicide a few times, I have realized that nobody can control the internal battles that I am feeling. Nobody can control those emotions, and you shouldn't make them feel like they do.

After all this shade I have thrown at the show, I do want to say that there is something that they did get right. After her death, everyone seems to care. That's how it always is. After someone commits suicide, suddenly everyone cares. You die and suddenly the world loves you. You're gone and suddenly everyone wishes they had done something to help you. It's like they suddenly act like you exist when you stop existing. It's all just a rough reality that we live in

Don't wait until they're gone to show you care. If you like someone, tell them, because chances are they might like you too. And even if they don't, it could bring infinite joy to them to know that someone out there likes them. If you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, don't forget to show them how much they mean to you each and every day. Don't forget the little things. Show them that you actually care. Never make them feel like they're alone in this world. If you have a best friend or sibling, bring them a cookie, write them a note, sing with them. Do something for them. Do anything. You see a stranger, smile. You like their tattoos and piercings, tell them. Show them how awesome they are. Because sometimes we just need that one word, that one smile to push on. Suicide is not glamorous. It's a nightmare that has been growing more and more in our lives... But just one word, one smile can truly affect what happens. After all, there are 13+ Reasons Why you shouldn't give up.
