Suicide Is a Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem

Why Suicide Is a Permanent Solution

Suicide is PERMANENT!

We've all heard the saying before, right? "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." I find this particular quote rather debatable. Why, you ask? The leading cause of suicide is depression. People claim that the problem is "temporary" when in reality, depression doesn't go away. It may go away for weeks, for months or even for years. However, it doesn't disappear forever. Depression is a crippling mental illness. It makes it difficult for you to get out of bed every morning. It makes you want to sleep all day and other times, you're up all night and all day with painful thoughts and feelings. You either stop eating altogether or you eat too much and too frequently. You start to lose interest in the things you used to enjoy. You cry all the time. You start to push loved ones away because you think they couldn't possibly understand what you're going through. Some people resort to self-harming.

Let's be honest about two things: 1. Suicide is oftentimes done on impulse. Somebody is bullying you. You're flunking out in school. Your relationship is falling apart or has ended. You're broke with no idea how you're going to pay this month's rent. You think things can't get any worse, so you escape by taking your own life. You don't even think about it, you just do it. What happens then? You just ended your life over something that could've been fixed. You can't go back in time and come back to life. That is precisely why people use the phrase "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem." 2. The second thing we should be honest about is that most people who commit suicide didn't actually want to die. They just wanted the pain to stop. Suicidal people are under the impression that the pain will stop once they've ended their lives, but that's not necessarily true.

Ending your own life creates pain for everybody. It seems a great amount of people who commit suicide, feel pain on their way out. Nobody truly knows what happens to people after they take their own lives. I worry that they go through more pain on the other side. Also, they leave their loved ones with pain in their hearts. Oftentimes when people commit suicide, they have convinced themselves that nobody loves them. They've convinced themselves that nobody will miss them once they're gone. They're wrong. When people choose to end their life, the ones who love them feel sad. They feel they're to blame. They feel as though they could've done something to prevent this from happening. Even worse, it may create a chain reaction and somebody you love might want to do the same thing. Again, suicide is PERMANENT. Nobody can go back in time and take it back or fix things.

Depression hurts. It hurts the person who has it, it hurts the people around them. It may be permanent, but it is manageable. Suicide is not the only way to cure depression. Talk to somebody. Keep talking to people until somebody gets you help. You CAN be saved before it gets to the point where you feel you have to end your life. Remember, there is no coming back from suicide. Things will get better. It may not be tomorrow or next week or next month, but things WILL get better. One of the biggest reasons people commit suicide is due to being bullied. If you're being bullied or somebody you know is being bullied, tell somebody. Tell your parents, your counselor, your principal. Somebody will listen and they will do something about it. Nobody or nothing is worth taking your life over.
