The Benefits of Being Realistic Over Being Positive

Why "the Glass Is Half Empty or Half Full" Approach Is Outdated

How many people believe the key to a well-balanced treatment plan or overcoming an obstacle starts with having a positive attitude? Even though a positive attitude can be a very good quality or personality trait, there's a great deal more to dealing with the things life throws at us than having a looking on the bright approach to life's problems.

Let's be honest, life is a lot more than just rainbows and lollipops, which means that you need to deal with the good things as well as the bad things life throws our way. This means not avoiding things such as negative thoughts and feelings simply because they make you feel uncomfortable or because they're difficult to deal with.

Having just a positive attitude towards things can actually cause more problems than it solves. It can do this by causing the following problems described below.

• It can lead to people being disappointed and frustrated more than actually being happy, due to having unrealistic expectations on how we view ourselves and others.

• You may not get an accurate understanding of the way something can affect you, due to not seeing it and all the potential variables that can affect it.

• It can cause you to not be focused on the things that are actually important. Instead, it can give you a tunnel vision approach to dealing with those things.

Now let’s look at a few things that can help you deal more effectively with the things that life throws at us.

• Following the proper advice and using effective strategies in order to help you deal with the things that you struggle with so that you can overcome the obstacles that you struggle with in your day-to-day life.

• Having an understanding of what’s within your power to change and not within your power to change.

• Looking at what you do that can either help or sabotage your progress.

• Obtaining the proper support for dealing with the negative behaviors and habits you struggle with.

• Taking the SMART goals approach so that you focus on what is important. (These things are to be: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely.) When dealing with the things that you struggle with or the things that you want to change in your life.

• Eliminating toxic people from our lives and not making excuses for their toxic behaviour.

• Developing the proper tools and using the proper resources for developing healthy coping strategies.

• Understanding that mental health stigma is an unfortunate part of our world. Focus on educating and empowering yourself through understanding the difference between the myths and facts that relate to mental health.

• When an obstacle seems overwhelming, instead of shying away from it or avoiding it, break it down into smaller steps. That way it’ll seem less overwhelming.

• Having a strong sense of self-awareness and also self-acceptance.

• Creating internal and external boundaries

• Putting aside any preconceived notions that you might have relating to the various fields that make up our health care system.

This article, just like many of my articles, I try to stress the importance of taking responsibility of our own well-being. Which is why we need to not only see the good things in our life but also the negative things as well. In order to have a full understanding of the things that we come in contact with.

That way we have a better idea of how those things impact us and can deal with them in a healthier way. Which means sometimes that we need to step out of our comfort zone. That way we stop seeing things for how we assume them to be; instead see them for how they are.
