Using Letters as an Escape

A Fun and Simple Use of Writing Letters (They Don't Even Have to Be Sent)

Have you ever just felt so lonely and wanted someone to talk to, yet you have a level of social anxiety that puts you back into the closet and all alone? Or you are just simply lonely and have no one to talk to?

I have recently found a great way of helping myself of getting out of this loneliness by writing letters. Obviously, these letters are letters that you might not actually send out, but the way that letters work gives you like someone whom you are intending to be writing to. Hence this gives you a target person in which you are, in a way, talking to, so you are able to formulate the way you are writing the letter to that person.

An example of one of the best ways I love to use in writing letters is writing fan mail. You choose a celebrity that you really like and/or admire, have a crush on, or whatever the reason why you would want to speak with them, then you just write: "To so and so...." and start typing and geeking out about what you would want to say to them, and this could be anything. You can be as open as you want, write however you want, tell as little as you want, but in the end, it’s different than just writing a diary where you are basically listing out what you did in the day and writing about what has just crossed your mind, keeping yourself in your own personal bubble. Of course, this doesn’t even have to be fan mail, it could be an actual crush you wish to confess your love to and why you love them, to an artist and why you like their works, to a friend/family member whom you have so much to tell, but you hate speaking in person to them, to a fictional character—really, you can write to anyone, dead or alive, real or not.

Letters are so simple, yet as they change the perspective in which you write in and give you someone to write to, make you feel like you have someone there to listen you. You may or may not actually end up sending out the letter or give it to anyone, but once again, it will help you feel less lonely and to have a fun way to enjoy a nice and open chat with whomever you want.

Hope you all give this a try and have some fun writing some random, awkward, silly, horrendous, explicit, crazy, etc....etc... letters.

An example of a fan mail would look like this:

To Jerry Bruckheimer,

Hi, I am a huge fan of all your work. I am currently a student studying film/arts and look forward to maybe collaborating with you on a project in the future. It may be a very distant future, but a future I have always dreamed of since I was a kid and have never given up on. My love for film came from watching this one scene in the second Pirates of the Caribbean film, Dead Man's Chest, the "I Got a Jar of Dirt" scene that was made up by Johnny Depp himself. I always found it fascinating how this one made up scene that was placed into the film just happened to be the one scene that hooked me onto that film and then, later, the whole franchise, which led to this huge spark of love for film in my life. Ever since then, I knew it was my dream to become a filmmaker.

I find it coincidence that my current favorite TV show happens to be Lucifer, which is produced by you. Not only with Lucifer, but with so many other movies and shows that you have produced, a lot of them happen to be some of my favorites. I really love your work and look forward to studying and working my way into the film industry and maybe get the chance to work with you someday.

Sincerely,

Shaune Lam
