Who is Self?

A Purpose

The self, when approaching it from a philosophical view, is scary — the possibility that lies within how many replicas of me; what is the me like in those situations? Those questions come later. Is the self nonexistent without a physical representation? 100 percent physicality is mainly important, but why? Something, filled with a life force, needs to be here on earth to take on responsibility for the actions and thoughts of the person. No matter which body it ends up in, the self is practically not real without some form of physical life. This is sad because this form of self defines how we view the world. I think that it's sad that the way we view the world is dependent upon the body we were given. As we see this form affects gender and how we determine what we do with it. The self is not at all accommodating. To find yourself, you must step outside of the skin and bones you were dealt and reach a state of omnipresence that overpowers all outward focus of what you see in the mirror and reaffirms it into the being you choose to be, on your own, without help. This is the state of self-acceptance. So, to say the most, the self is ever-changing, but why? Well, we are always finding new ideas, new prophecies, and new ways of life. No one ever stays the same once in their life. We all differ from what we can do. The path we choose to take may be different than the one we would have chosen the day before or even the minute before we made that final decision. We all constantly change to meet how we feel in the present moment.

The scariest part of being a human is having the right of choice. Little do we think if the choices we make impact us only five minutes from now or five decades. Our story is constantly in the making. How easy is it for us to say, “this is what I’m here for?" How do we know the considered statement is true to who you are? Then, here comes another belief. Are we today not how we say we are? Did our personal narrative die a long time ago or are we still now consistent within our own path? This defines our present, but it explains our past and directs our future. Let me explain. Our present-self is now: we got here because of choices we made in the past. We can tell from a person’s choices who they are and who we can try to determine them to be. Notice the emphasis on try, because like I’ve said before, we are ever-changing. What makes sense to us one day may leave us in complete and utter confusion the next day. We can always guide ourselves to make the right choices for the future. Our narrative defines who we are now.

From within, we think of ourselves highly. Negativity mainly comes from outside forces enacting opinions on a person. Most people would like to think of themselves as good people. Others know that it's only the visor they project into the world. The most vulnerable of people will allow the things that the outside world make them out to be, especially when the things are true. Other people choose to ignore these factors. All of this affects how we perceive ourselves. We can define ourselves by our own opinions but to not distort them we must consider the opinions of the outside.

I believe that the self exists 70 percent in the present, 28 percent in the past, and 2 percent in the future. Let me explain. We are defined by our actions of now, right? Then, most of how we are being defined is by who we are now. One day, you may believe in religion, and the next, you may believe in science. Your opinions have now negated your past belief, for if someone asks you if you are religious, you would say, “no I’m an atheist.” The reason I say that only 28 percent of yourself retires into the past is because you are a mansion in progress. You cannot begin building yourself from nothing. You must have ideas, memories, and experiences. The past establishes who you are today, but it does not dictate who you are. As for the future self, you barely have any control of what happens, because most of what happens to your future self is dictated by outside factors. Your self lives in the present nonchalance of anything that may influence its path.

The part of my “self” that emerges is the self that looks at things from several different perspectives, but my words sort of get discombobulated during speaking. I try to look on a more open spectrum and take in everyone’s views. I do believe that this is my most prevalent form of self that appears. My self is very open and engaging. I love being free-spirited with minimal control. This is the self that I present and I feel that this most represents who I am today.
